Junior Graphic Designer For Educational Books
EMC Design Ltd
Bedfordshire
Competitive, Permanent
12 May 2010
EMC Design Ltd is a graphic design studio specialising in the design and production of educational books for some of the top publishers in the UK such as Oxford and Cambridge University Presses, Pearson Education, Macmillan Education, and others.
Our company is growing steadily and we are currently twelve full time staff working from a picturesque old barn, just outside Bedford in the rural countryside.
We produce books for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (ELT books) which are sold around the world and also books for schools within the UK. The work is challenging and we concentrate on mainly highly illustrated books at all levels from primary to adult. We are a design led company and have grown on the strength of providing highly creative solutions with an eye to accuracy and quality. Have a look at some of the work on our web-site (www.emcdesign.org.uk).
We have increased business this year and now need an additional designer. We are looking for people with a good graphic design degree or HND. Because the work is complex and challenging, we have found that a degree with a high element of typography and editorial design works best for us. In our experience, designers with just web-design or product design do not have the required skills, so need not apply.
We are looking for candidates with a year or two’s experience working within the field of editorial design – either books or magazines. Or, if you are still looking for that first job from university and have some excellent examples of editorial design, we would consider your application. And the key to the job is that you need to be interested in working within this specialist field.
Apart from designing a sample at the start of a book series, it is mainly steady, page-by-page layout work within the agreed design template, but requiring talent and creativity to make each page stand out. We use mostly InDesign for layout and also Photoshop and Illustrator to support the complex elements we put on the page, so experience of these software packages is essential. You need to be tenacious, with good attention to detail and happy to work on long projects.
Salary starts from £14,500 for college leavers, up to £19,000 depending on experience and a good CV. A contributory company pension scheme is in operation. Moving expenses will be considered if you are applying from outside the Bedford area.
How to apply
Please email a letter of application, your CV and some samples of your work in PDF format, preferably showing examples of editorial design
